Support — Globetrail

Globetrail is Aumatex’s app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch to mark where you have been: countries, regions, cities, UNESCO sites and wonders, on three world maps. There is no account: your travels stay on your device and, with sync on, in your iCloud. Here are the answers to the most common questions about version 4.0.

Globetrail

iCloud, export and your data

  • Settings › iCloud › Automatic sync keeps your devices on the same iCloud account in step, and the “Status” row tells you where it stands. “Sign in to iCloud in the iOS Settings” means the device has no iCloud account; “Waiting for network” means only the connection is missing.
  • If you change the iCloud account on the device, “Sync now” appears on the same page: tap it to merge your data.
  • When you turn sync off you choose between “Keep on iCloud” and “Delete from iCloud”; the data on the device stays either way. Deleting from iCloud needs a connection: without one, sync stays on.
  • Settings › Data › Export My Data creates a file with everything you marked, to keep or move. “Import from file”, on the same page, reads it back: it adds to what is there, removes nothing and, for a visit already there, keeps the earlier date.
  • “Delete All My Data”, in Settings › Data, erases what you marked on this device, on iCloud and on your other devices, and resets your Game Center achievements (leaderboard scores stay). It cannot be undone: export first if you want a copy.

Maps, countries and visits

  • There are three maps: Globe, Planisphere and Detail, Apple’s maps down to regions, cities and places. The one chosen in Settings › Map › Default map opens at launch; on a new install it is the Globe. If you update from 3.x you see the Globe at the first launch of 4.0, then the map you had chosen comes back.
  • Also in Settings › Map you choose how visited countries are filled on the Globe and the Planisphere (continent color, country flag, single color, year of first visit, visit status) and the style: Classic, Pastel and Dark are free, Earth, Antique paper, Ink and Neon are PRO.
  • On a country’s page you set its status: “Visited”, “Lived there” or “Transit”, meaning airport only, which shows on the map but doesn’t count among visited countries. When you mark a city, its region and country are marked too; when you remove a country, the app shows you what goes with it.
  • Can’t find a country? Settings › Countries & Collections shows or hides, each with its own switch, the “UN observers”, the countries with “Limited recognition” and the “Territories and nations” (Greenland, Puerto Rico, England, Scotland and the others), which are counted apart and never as countries. The same page shows or hides the collections.
  • Settings › Visits › Ask the year when I mark decides whether marking a place asks for the year of your first visit; off, the visit has no date. If some visited countries have no year, “Visit years” on the same page asks them one at a time.

Trips found in your photos

  • From your photos and videos Globetrail reads only where and when they were taken, on your phone: the pictures themselves are never opened and nothing leaves the device. It finds countries, regions, cities, places and trips, and you confirm item by item before anything is marked.
  • It needs access to your photos, full or just to the photos you choose. With limited access the search looks only at those, and “Manage allowed photos” lets you add more. If you said no, allow it in the iOS Settings › Globetrail › Photos.
  • Without PRO the import marks the countries and adds the trips it finds to the diary up to the free limit of 3 trips; regions, cities, places and the other trips are counted and get marked with PRO.
  • You can run it again whenever you like from Settings › Data › Find trips in your photos: what you have already marked is not offered again.

Travelling: Arrival Notice and Nearby

  • With location set to “While Using the App”, when you open Globetrail in a country you haven’t marked yet, the app asks whether to mark it. The same permission is enough for “Nearby”, in the Globetrail section: UNESCO sites, wonders, cities and countries around you that you haven’t visited yet. Globetrail asks for it only when you tap “Use My Location”.
  • The Arrival Notice, in Settings › Travelling › Arrival Notice, tells you when you arrive in a new country even with the app closed, after about half an hour and never between 10 pm and 8 am, with a “Mark Visited” button on the notification. Turning it on, Globetrail asks for notifications and then for “Always” location: without either, the notice stays off.
  • If you already said no to iOS, “Open Settings” appears instead of the switch: it takes you to Globetrail’s page in the iOS Settings, where you turn notifications on or choose “Always” for location.
  • The “Proximity Alerts”, on the same page, are PRO: “Near a UNESCO Site”, “Near a Wonder” and “Near a Collection Place”. They alert you when you are a few km from a place you haven’t visited yet, at most 3 a day and never between 10 pm and 8 am, and they ask for the same permissions as the Arrival Notice.
  • The country you are in and the places nearby are worked out on your phone with the borders built into the app: your location is never synced or sent to anyone.

Apple Watch, widgets and Siri

  • On Apple Watch Globetrail shows your numbers, your last country and your next trip, in the complications too. The data comes from your iPhone: if the Watch is empty or out of date, open Globetrail on the iPhone, which sends it the latest summary as soon as it can. On the Watch you can answer “Mark Visited” on the Arrival Notice.
  • The widgets are Map, Statistics, Overview, Progress, Next Trip, Nearby and Want to Go, for the Home Screen, the Lock Screen and StandBy. The Nearby widget shows what the app worked out last time: if it stays empty, open “Nearby” in Globetrail.
  • On departure day and during a diary trip, the trip shows on the Lock Screen as a Live Activity. Turn it off in Settings › Travelling › Trips on the Lock Screen.
  • The “Mark Where I Am” control, which you can add to Control Center, the Lock Screen or the Action button, marks the country you are in as visited without opening the app. With Siri and Shortcuts you can say “Mark where I am in Globetrail”, ask how many countries you have visited or open a country. Marking where you are needs only “While Using the App” location; if you never allowed it, the app opens the first time to ask.

Comparing, passport, poster and your year

  • “Compare with a friend”, in the Globetrail section: “My code” shows your QR for your friend to scan, “Scan” reads theirs, “Send the link” sends it as a link. The code holds only which countries and territories you visited, how many, the continents, your share of the world and, if “Show my name” is on, your first name: no places, dates or account, and no server.
  • Scanning a QR needs the camera; if you didn’t allow it, ask your friend for the link. The friends you save, under “Your friends”, stay on this device only.
  • The “Passport” has a stamp for every country: browsing it and sharing its pages is free, the “Printable PDF” is PRO. The “Map poster” is free to look at too; “Create PDF” to print it is PRO.
  • Your year of travel is free and arrives on 15 December: until 31 January it sits at the top of the Globetrail section, then it stays in your profile until the next December. The first one is 2026’s. With reminders on, in Settings › Reminders, you also get a notification on 15 December.

Leaderboards, trophies and Game Center

  • Leaderboards go through Game Center and are free. If you don’t appear, tap “Connect Game Center” on the Leaderboard card in the Globetrail section, or sign in to Game Center in the iOS Settings and come back to the app.
  • Scores update on their own when you mark a trip. Countries count the 195 the UN recognises, members and observers; territories apart. Only numbers go to Apple, never which countries or places.
  • The trophies you unlock also appear under “Trophies on Game Center”. “Delete All My Data” resets your Game Center achievements, while leaderboard scores stay.

Globetrail PRO

  • Globetrail PRO comes as a subscription, monthly or yearly, or as a lifetime purchase, and works on all your devices with the same Apple ID. Without PRO you keep everything you mark, without limits: countries, regions, cities, UNESCO sites and collections, the three maps, statistics, trophies, widgets, Apple Watch and sync.
  • PRO adds the Earth, Antique paper, Ink and Neon styles, the diary without limits on trips and photos, the full photo import, every photo overlay template, the printable passport and poster, the PRO statistics, the proximity alerts, four alternate icons and sharing without the Globetrail mark.
  • New device or reinstalled app: “Restore Purchases” is on the Globetrail PRO screen and, with PRO active, also on the PRO card at the top of Settings.
  • You manage or cancel the subscription with “Manage subscription” on the PRO card at the top of Settings, or from the App Store: iOS Settings › your name › Subscriptions. Auto-renewal stops if you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the period; the lifetime purchase never renews.
  • If you update from 3.x, the first launch of 4.0 shows a welcome with what’s new and offers only the steps you are missing: the country you live in, the photo import and the year of the countries you already marked. The PRO you had stays yours: if it doesn’t show, use “Restore Purchases”.

Privacy

  • There is no account or sign-up, and we have no servers for your data: countries, places, trips and profile stay on your device and in your iCloud. The summary is in Settings › Privacy › Where Your Data Is.
  • Usage statistics are pseudonymous, tied to a hashed installation identifier, and are on by default; they can be turned off in Settings › Privacy › Anonymous usage statistics. They contain no names, contacts or location, nor which countries you visited.
  • No ads and no tracking. All the details are in Globetrail’s privacy policy.
